Why it Matters..
My journey into creating Color Outside the Lines began with a simple question: how does anime, a genre with characters and stories so different from my own, resonate so deeply with me and my culture? Growing up, I was captivated by shows like Trigun, Dragon Ball Z, and Inuyasha, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the connection. As I dove deeper into the history of anime and its evolving relationship with hip-hop, I discovered stories of resilience, individuality, and defiance that echoed the heart of Black culture and hip-hop’s origins.
This event is not just a nod to the love for anime; it’s a celebration of Black ingenuity and creativity. Every detail of this event has been crafted to be accurate, tasteful, and respectful of both cultures. I’ve studied, researched, and collaborated with fellow creatives to ensure this is for the culture—where anime and hip-hop fans alike can see themselves and celebrate this unique fusion. Welcome to a journey that honors the past, embraces the present, and pushes the boundaries for the future.
